Competition regulations

The Khachaturian International Youth Competition is co-sponsored by the Khachaturian Cultural Foundation and Jingse (Beijing) International Education Technology Co., Ltd. It is jointly guided by the Ministry of Culture of Armenia, the Central Opera House, and the Beijing Shijingshan District Culture and Tourism Bureau. The event is jointly supported by the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in Armenia and the Embassy of Armenia in the People's Republic of China. It aims to provide a platform for music-loving teenagers around the world to showcase their talents, while also providing an important channel and new track for cultivating and discovering young musical talents. The Khachaturian International Competition is an internationally renowned classical music celebration. As a member of the World Federation of International Music Competitions (WFIMC), its authority and professionalism have been widely recognized internationally. The completion of the youth competition has injected new blood into the Khachaturian International Competition.

This competition will continue to work with the internationally renowned conductor and Artistic Director of the Khachaturian International Competition Sergey Smbatyan. The Central Opera House Symphony Orchestra and the Armenian National Symphony Orchestra participated in the entire event, which was broadcast live worldwide. The competition not only provides generous prizes and honors, but also provides outstanding young contestants with a series of professional cooperation resources such as performances and introductions to international brokerage companies, allowing them to open the door to their careers and embrace their dreams of music and art.


1. This competition is open to young people under the age of 18 from all over the world.

2. The competition is divided intoamateurand professional groups. The amateur group is divided into two stages: global qualifiers and finals. The professional group is divided into four stages: global qualifiers, first round, semi-finals and finals.

3. This competition is open to three majors: piano, violin, and cello .And set up a variety of special awards.

4. This competition has different age groups. The establishment of different age groups provides uniquegrowth opportunities for contestants of all ages.

1. Amateur group:

Children's Group A:7 years old and below (born after November 2, 2016)

Children's Group B:8 years old - 9 years old (November 2, 2014 - November 1, 2016)

Youth Group A:13 years old - 15 years old (November 2, 2008 - November 1, 2011)

Youth Group B:16 years old - 18 years old (November 2, 2005 - November 1, 2008)

2. Professional group:

3. Group classification rules:

1)  Participants in the string professional category must collaborate with a collaborating pianist when performing.

2) Amateur string participants are encouraged to work with a collaborating pianist, but the use of accompaniment tapes is not permitted. Finalists must work with a collaborating pianist.

3)  Participants in the lower category can register to participate in the higher category, while participants in the higher category cannot participate in the lower category.

4)  Participants in the amateur group can register to participate in the professional group, but participants in the professional group cannot participate in the amateur group.

5) Junior high school and high school students studying in music majors in primary schools affiliated with professional music conservatories, middle schools affiliated with professional music conservatories, art colleges, and comprehensive universities are not allowed to participate in the amateur group.


(三) competition rules:

1. The Khachaturian International Youth Competition includes a global pre-selection stage (non-Chinese participants are encouraged to participate in the selection offline, and you can also submit video materials for the pre-selection stage. Chinese participants sign up to participate in the offline global selection. (Chinese participants are required to have force majeure factors, you can apply to the organizing committee to submit a video selection) and three rounds of the global official competition in Beijing: the first round, the second round (semi-finals), and the third round (finals). Amateur group participants are divided into global qualifiers and Two stages of the finals.

2. All entries must be performed from memory (except sonatas with piano). The track selected by the entrant may not be changed after submission.

3. Based on the standardization of the genre and the total duration of each round of performance, the competing performers can decide whether to repeat the performance. The timer starts from when the contestant comes on stage until the end of the round.

4. All contestants must strictly follow the requirements of the regulations, fill in the registration information completely and accurately, and ensure its authenticity. Contestants must be fully responsible for the authenticity and correctness of the age, category, repertoire and other information they have reported, such as Anyone found to have reported false or erroneous information will be treated as a violation, and the organizing committee has the right to disqualify him or her from participating, and all consequences will be borne by the participants. If you have any questions about the contents of the charter, you can consult the organizing committee’s customer service.

5. All contestants can decide by themselves the order of the repertoire to be performed in each round of the competition (except for the professional group finals). The performance order of the professional group finals must be based on the determined order of the competition.

6. All contestants must perform the entire repertoire. The judges have the right to stop the performance during the global qualifying competition, but it will not affect the competition results. The judges are not allowed to stop the performance in each round of the final/main competition.

7. Contestants must participate on time, register and check in on-site within the designated time, and bring valid documents such as ID card or household registration booklet, passport, etc. for on-site confirmation.  Participants who do not participate in the competition on time will be automatically forfeited, and the organizing committee has the right to disqualify the participants from the competition.

8. Please bring your own collaborating pianist for the global qualifiers. During the finals and qualifying rounds, the competition organizing committee will provide professional collaborative pianists (you can also provide your own collaborative pianists)

9. The organizing committee will determine participants check-in and competition time according to the competition group.  Participants in each group will draw lots to determine the order of playing, and it will be a unique serial number.

10. After selection in the pre-selection stage of the competition, the competition organizing committee will announce the shortlist within one month.

11. The final performance of the professional group will be performed by the Armenian National Symphony Orchestra, the official orchestra of this competition.

12. All competition sites for this competition are open to the public. The entire three rounds of the global official competition will be broadcast live online by "Today's Music" and "Love Mandi Classical Music Channel". The live broadcast will continue until the end of the performance of the last contestant on each competition day. After the competition, only the performances of the winning contestants can be viewed on the official website. The rights to broadcast the entire competition and its individual rounds, all audio and video recordings and their further use rights belong to the competition organizing committee and will only be provided to the contestants upon request. Entrants may not use or make available to third parties video recordings of their performances without the written permission of the Contest. The entire broadcast platform of the competition must be authorized by the organizing committee.

13. The organizing committee owns the ownership of all video, camera, and picture content related to the competition, and can use it for competition-related publicity during the preparation, hosting, and after the competition without paying any compensation to the participants.

14. The Jury fully reserves the right to allocate award places or to allocate award places among candidates. The decision of the judging panel is final, and contestants are not allowed to appeal.

15. Score statistics and performance review are carried out by full-time staff assigned by the organizing committee, and no other personnel are allowed to intervene. The contestants’ scores in each round are the final decision of the judging panel, and contestants are not allowed to check scores or appeal.

16. After the promotion results of each round of competition are announced, all contestants who did not advance will receive written opinions from the jury on their performance.

17. The prize money received by the winning participants is before tax, and the participants should pay personal income tax in accordance with relevant laws.

18. All contestants are requested to always pay attention to the official WeChat account of the competition "Khachaturian International Music Competition" and the official website: https://www.khachaturiancompetition-cn.com/ for all relevant information and notices of the competition, including schedule, time changes, The results of the competition will be released uniformly on the official WeChat public account and official website platform. Please check the official WeChat information of the competition in a timely manner to avoid delays in the competition.

19. The competition organizing committee can adjust some terms within one month before the start of the global qualifying competition.

20. The organizing committee has the final say on this competition.

21. The organizing committee has the right to change all matters related to the competition. In the event of bad weather, force majeure or special reasons, the organizing committee has the right to change the competition time or cancel the competition on that day until further notice.


(四) how to apply:

1. Submit information application through the official organizing committee email: (Register now)

 Participants applying to participate should submit the following documents:

1) Copy of ID card or passport (UPEG or PDF format);

2) Autobiography in Chinese and English (Microsoft Word format);

3) One high-resolution artistic photo (minimum size 2Mb, JPEG format) for use in contest promotional materials;

4) Registration application form;

5) Proof of registration fee payment must be sent together with other documents and videos (for non-Chinese participants). Fees are non-refundable.

6)  Participants from China will participate in the global qualifiers in Macau.

Note: Each participants can only participate in one category.


Competitors from non-Chinese regions who sign up to record a video must perform the entire qualifier repertoire. The video must not be edited, it must be shot to the end. No subtitles or logos that reveal participants information may appear in the recorded and played audio and video footage, otherwise it will be deemed invalid.

3. Instructions for contestants:

1) When accepting registration, the competition organizing committee will collect the personal information of the participants to meet certain program needs of the competition. Personal information is stored in reliable databases. Only the following details about the entrant will be published: name, date of birth, place of birth, nationality, resume, photo, personal website and social media profiles.

2) By submitting a competition application, entrants confirm their acceptance of all conditions of the competition.

3) After receiving the official invitation letter from the competition, non-Chinese contestants should apply for a visa to the Chinese embassy or consulate in their country.

4) The competition reserves the right to reject applications that do not comply with the rules of the competition. When the competition requires more information, entrants may be asked to provide supplementary information. Thank you for your cooperation.
