Khachaturian International Cello Competition Opens in Beijing
The 22nd Khachaturian International Cello Competition opened on December 22 at the China National Opera House in Beijing, bringing together young cellists from around the world for five days of competition.
The opening was attended by Vahe Gevorgyan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Armenia to the People's Republic of China, and Ma Wen, Chair of the Jury and Professor of Cello at the Central Conservatory of Music.
Guided jointly by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Armenia, the Aram Khachaturian Cultural Foundation, and the China National Opera House, the competition honors the artistic legacy of Aram Khachaturian while building a musical bridge across Eurasia.
The opening concert featured conductor Lu Jia leading the China National Opera House Symphony Orchestra with cellist Christine J. Lee, a professor at the Curtis Institute of Music. Khachaturian's Concerto-Rhapsody for Cello received its China premiere, and Liu Yunzhi's orchestral work Celebration Overture was also performed.
The competition consists of three rounds. Finalists will have the opportunity to perform with the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra, combining high-level competition with cross-cultural artistic dialogue.
After the Khachaturian International Violin Competition was held in China in 2023, a long-term development plan for the Khachaturian brand in China was established. The 22nd Cello Competition marks a further step from youth education into the advanced professional concert stage.
